She’s Back
Daddy’s Overdraft
A pearly white coat glistened in the morning sun on green horse fields turf track. 15.3 hands of pure muscle and heart. The Unicorn Horn Turf champion was back, almost a three month long layoff seemed to have had no effect on her. Her gallop was perfectly synchronized with her jockey’s movements, and they looked like they were one being. Her name may not have been a household one yet, but it was definitely one brought to the back of a few trainers, and jockeys minds when they thought about the Y14 Turf Triple Crown. Daddy’s Overdraft that is.Alex pushed the grey filly along at a leisurely pace. He had been selected to ride Cobweb in the G5 Concorde Stakes, a prep for Cobweb to get back on the Turf Triple Crown trail.
He couldn’t help but love the filly from the start, with her bouncy firecracker personality. He swore up and down that she couldn’t stand still for more than thirty seconds. He could still see her snowy white head tossing from left to right as he approached her stall with Steve. When they took her out of her stall, she gave a small playful buck. Her beautiful white coat glistened over her defined and well toned muscles. Then when they brought her out to the track she was nearly leaping into the air with excitement.
Cobweb flicked her ears forward, although he could tell she was waiting for the ‘lets go’ signal by the way she poised herself, she seemed as if she might explode under any command.
“Steady,” he said to her and her ear flicked back. He had her full attention.
It was scary at times to think about how smart this filly was. She knew exactly what was going on, and when it was time to go.
He let a little rein out so the filly could have more of her head. She carried on, still plenty left in the tank. The nearly three month lay off seemed to have no effect on her, at least she seemed to be just fine. Simply from the way that she acted, if she saw another horse she would jerk on the reins wanting to race.
She must have been very laborious to handle for almost three months with how much energy she had. He couldn’t fathom how she could possibly have that much energy built up.
The home stretch was quickly approaching and Alex shook the reins a little and off Cobweb went. She dug her hooves into the turf, stride lengthening with every step and breath she took. She may have been a smaller horse, but her strides were massive.
She was flying, if that was even how they looked, but its how it felt. Her stride was so smooth and precise. She was something special that’s for sure. Alex continued giveing her a hand ride down to the wire.
They flew past the wire and Alex pulled up on the filly and let her complete her gallop out, all the while only one sentence could go through his mind, ‘holy crap, that was exhilarating.’
He trotted her over to Steve, and Steve simply laughed at the look of pure shock on Alex’s face.
“Well?” He said.
“That- that was somethin!” Alex exclaimed.
Cobweb tossed her head a little, already becoming bored from standing still for just a few seconds.
“Well, with that kind of a work, perhaps we should consider the Concorde stakes conquered.” Steve said giving the filly a good pat.
